Making a Mindelo

Hola, I'm back today with a new pattern!

It's been a while since I tried something fresh out of its release however the Mindelo Top by Itch to Stitch was hard to resist.

As you all know summer has been a HOT one here in the UK (not complaining) and therefore a simple little top is just the job.

With t-shirts looking a bit weird on me these days, I have been gravitating to 'tops' and blouses that I can tweak to fit.  I did make an initial 'test' version in some scraps of cotton lawn (this is Nerida Hansen - Millennial Summer from Beyond the Pink Door - how appropriate!)

One of the best bits of this top is how little fabric is needed! It's almost unheard of for me to be able to make anything wearable out of less than 1m but my scraps were about 80cm. Scrap buster!

The Mindelo Top is a V-neck vest style top with a button up front, and the option of a little flutter sleeve.  As per my usual Itch to Stitch sizing I went for 14/16 - and if you haven't used Itch to Stitch before each size comes with a variety of cup sizes too. I chose A-cup which doesn't usually have a dart - however this one does.

I chose to remove the dart straight away for my toile, thinking I wouldn't need it. It was only when I went to take these pictures that I noticed the top is really stretching across my chest. This was really weird because it wasn't tight at all, and there was extra room under my arms etc.

 Mysterious.

After a quick video call with the sewing Oracle who is The Fabric Wrangler, I decided to remake the shirt, keep the dart in, but move it from the side of the top to the waist - and leave it open - giving some extra room where it was needed. (If anyone wants a diagram of how to do that let me know although there's plenty of tutorials out there :)

This worked a treat!

I had bought a 1m remnant piece of striped linen mix from Fabric Godmother and to was perfect to use. I also decided to jazz this one up with some cargo pockets to break the plain print a bit. My sister made the buttons!

I really love the back of this top as it has back darts and gives me some shape especially as I have a sway back. From the back it looks quite smart. (My hair is growing out and now in the 'scruffy' stages).

I feel like this pattern is a good mix of classic and on trend - there are so many vest/waistcoats out at the moment this fits the bill just right.
